Camper drivers heading through Switzerland to Italy should check their arrival plans at the Gotthard Tunnel: The road tunnel on the A2 will be closed for four nights starting Monday evening, 28 September 2026. Meanwhile, police reported a camper fire on the Brenner motorway and a burglary in a camper van in Lower Saxony over the weekend.
Gotthard Tunnel Closed for Four Nights
The closures will take place from Monday to Thursday each night, starting at 8:00 PM and ending the following morning at 5:00 AM. This means the tunnel will be closed last on the night of 1–2 October. Two additional closures are scheduled for 5–7 October. The Swiss Touring Club (TCS) provides real-time updates on the tunnel portals on its traffic website.
Drivers planning to travel during these times can take a detour via the A13 and the San Bernardino route. According to the ADAC, the nearby Gotthard Pass is not recommended for vehicles with trailers as an alternative route. Checking current traffic conditions and route conditions before departure is advisable.
Camper Catches Fire at Brenner Toll Station
On Sunday afternoon, 27 September, a driver at the Schönberg main toll station on Austria’s A13 noticed smoke in the engine compartment of his camper. The man, his wife, their son, and two dogs safely exited the vehicle. ASFINAG staff alerted emergency services and initially attempted to extinguish the fire with portable fire extinguishers. The fire department successfully put out the blaze, but the camper sustained significant damage. The Tyrolean Police did not disclose the cause of the fire.
Burglary in Camper Van in Werlte
Between Thursday evening and Friday morning, 24–25 September, unknown individuals gained access to a camper van at Sögeler Straße in Werlte, Lower Saxony’s Emsland region. According to police, they searched the vehicle and stole, among other items, a gas cylinder and a reel of cable. The estimated damage is in the low three-digit range. Police in Sögel are appealing for witness statements.
